OFFICIAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR LATE MODEL STOCKS

Late Model Diagrams

ATTENTION ALL DRIVERS: Our goal is to complete our racing programs by 10:30 p.m. The pit booth will be open from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the following will be enforced ... Any driver not in his assigned starting spot when the cars roll onto the track for any event, will start at the rear of the pack. Once the initial green flag has been thrown, you may not join the field unless there is a complete restart. All races will use a rolling start. Sponsors will be read over the P.A. system during the course of the evening. Main events will be limited to 30 minutes (Count down clock will be stopped on red flags).

(All weights enforced with the driver at anytime)

CLASS A

Any GM, Ford, or Chrysler engine up to 365 CID. Cast iron heads or Brodix Spec heads. Heads are no touch. No grinding, deburring, pocket porting, acid porting, or polishing of any kind. Heads may be polished surface but must maintain a 60cc combustion chamber. You may remove material from combustion chamber to allow for piston clearance.

SPECFICATIONS FOR BRODIX SPEC HEADS

CHEVROLET BRODIX SPEC heads up to 365 cubic inches. Heads are NO TOUCH, no grinding, de- urring, pocket porting, acid porting or polishing of any kind. Heads may be surfaced but must maintain a 60cc combustion chamber. You may remove material from combustion chamber to allow for piston clearance. The intake side can only be 1.340" X 2.210" - FP 1206 gasket and the maximum depth of the gasket match cannot be deeper than 3/4" from the intake surface. Exhaust ports are NO TOUCH. Three angle valve job max. BRODIX SPEC aluminum cylinder head part number "SP CH".

MOPAR BRODIX SPEC heads up to 365 cubic inches. Heads are NO TOUCH, (same as CHEVY) The intake side can only be 1.150" X 2.250" - FP 1213 gasket and the maximum depth of gasket match cannot be deeper than 3/4" from intake surface. Exhaust ports NO TOUCH. Three angle valve job max. BRODIX SPEC aluminum head part number "SP MO".

FORD BRODIX SPEC heads up to 365 cubic inches. Heads are NO TOUCH, (same as CHEVY) The intake side can only be 1.280" X 2.100" - FP 1262 gasket and the maximum match cannot be deeper than 3/4" from intake surface. Exhaust ports are NO TOUCH. Three angle valve job max. BRODIX SPEC aluminum head part number "SP FO".

Engine setback - 8" maximum, measured on the long side. 6" setback for Brodi Spec heads. Weight 2300 lbs. with driver, any time.

Carburetor - Any carburetor up to and including 850 with 1-3/4" throttle bore.
Wheelbase - 103" - 1/2" tolerance.
No aluminum blocks!

CLASS B

Any GM, Ford, or Chrysler engine up to 365 CID.
Cast iron or aluminum heads.
Any port work okay.
Engine setback 6" maximum, measured on the long side.
Weight 2450 lbs. with driver, any time.
Carburetor - Any carburetor up to and including 850 with 1-3/4" throttle bore.
No aluminum blocks!

ENGINE RULES

1. Must be OEM production by American manufacture and retain original part number.

2. Maximum engine cubic inches up to 365 for GMC and 365 for Ford or Chrysler. Limit two valves per cylinder.

3. Centerline of crankshaft may not vary more than one inch (1") from centerline of front stub.

4. All added weight must be in block form PAINTED WHITE with the car number on it. Weight must be securely fastened inside the body panels and not on rear bumper.

5. Starter - All cars must have starters in working order.

6. The ignition switch must be mounted in the driver's compartment and clearly marked ON/OFF.

7. All batteries must be mounted in an approved manner in front of the fuel cell. No batteries allowed in the driver's compartment.

8. Carburetor air dams or devices to increase airflow to the carburetor are NOT allowed outside of air cleaner.

9. Dry sump oil systems may be used.

10. Oil coolers allowed, must be mounted outside driver's compartment.

11. There must be an inspection hole, minimum one-inch (1") diameter in the oil pan for rod and crank inspection. Be prepared to drop pan if hole is not available.

12. Titanium rods, crankshafts, etc., not allowed. Titanium valves are okay.

13. MUFFLERS mandatory with strict db reading of 95 decibels at 100 feet.

3. Pick up trucks O.K. but must conform to all Late Model mechanical rules. And, specifically, 1/2 ton maximum; 6' bed maximum; tail gate required; metal tonneau over bed required; and, fuel tank must be filled from inside bed.

1. All cars must have complete bodies including roofs, hoods, fenders, and deck lids.

2. Hoods and deck lids must be equipped with approved positive locking fasteners.

3. Steel floor must be complete in driver's compartment in approximate stock position between front and rear firewalls. Remanufactured floor pans must be of 18 gauge steel minimum and subject to final approval of track officials.

4. Bumpers and bumper guards may be reinforced on inside.

5. Maximum body width 76".

6. Window openings minimum 12" high.

7. Stock appearing roofs. No flat or wedge roofs.

8. Quarter panels may not be higher than rear deck.

9. Provide tow hook front and rear to facilitate wrecker hook up.

10. No car will be allowed to run without hood in place.

BRAKES

1. Three working brakes required at all times.

CRASH BARS

1. No nerfing and crash bars.

CLUTCH

1. Heavy duty, replacement or rebuilt, stock type clutches of any manufacturer permitted. Does not apply to internal clutch transmissions or automatic transmissions.

2. All cars with conventional type clutches must have 360 deg. steel "Lakewood" type housing installed between engine and transmission. No rubber belting or hand fabricated steel scatter shields permitted.

3. Any standard transmission must have an operational clutch, pressure plate and flywheel.

4. After market multi-disc clutches allowed.

ELECTRICAL

1. Any single coil battery operated ignition system allowed.

2. Battery must be securely mounted and covered.

CARBURETION

1. Intake manifolds to be cast aluminum, O.E.M. configuration only.

2. No multiple carburetors, supercharger or fuel injector.

3. Two return springs required on carburetor, or linkage.

4. No vacuum leaks between intake valves and carburetor.

FUEL

1. Fuel cells mandatory, and must be contained in a minimum 18 gauge metal enclosure.

2. Fuel cell must contain tip over check valve.

3. Firewall must separate driver from fuel cell.

4. No electric fuel pumps or pressure systems.

5. No nitrous oxide systems allowed.

1. Quick change rear ends are permitted.

SAFETY

1. Racing seats required.

2. Nylon racing type safety belts, three (3) inches wide are required and must be securely mounted to frame or roll bar, subject to approval of tech. inspector. Nylon shoulder harnesses are required and must not be mounted lower than 2" below top of driver's shoulders. Cotton belts and harnesses are prohibited (Five point system required). All belts must be dated, and no more than three years old.

3. Window nets: Standard size (16X22") window net required.

4. Driver fire retardant suit required. Must be at least two (2) layer with full Nomex underwear, shoes and gloves.

5. Helmets: Approved racing helmets with face shield or goggles mandatory. Closed or Open faced. Snell SA2000.

6. A fire extinguisher must be located in each car's pit area. Mandatory!

7. No safety...no race!

STEERING

1. Center of steering wheel must be padded.

2. Quick release steering wheel required.

CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION

1. Frames shall be manufactured of steel.

2. Remote control of suspension prohibited.

3. Coil overs okay.

4. No mechanical or hydraulic device for shifting weight or raising and lowering of chassis from driveršs compartment allowed. Rear coil spring jack screws okay.

TRANSMISSIONClick here to return to previous page...

1. Transmission must remain in original position, and be interchangeable with stock.

2. Must have at least two (2) forward gears and one (1) reverse in good working order.

3. Drive line must have safety straps at front and rear of drive shaft made of metal straps of 3/16"by 1" minimum size.

4. All drive lines must be painted white, or aluminum.

WHEELS AND TIRES

1. Wheel width 14" maximum, measured inside the bead. No carbon fiber wheels. Bead locks okay.

2. One compound. Hoosier D-55 Spec Dirt tire required on 14" wheels. Tires are available in the following sizes: 92.0/11-15; 90.0/11-15; and, 88.0/11-15 for use on 14" wheels.

3. All wheels must be approved by Tech.

IDENTIFICATION

1. Officially assigned numbers at least 18" high and 4" in width (10% Tolerance) must be neatly lettered on both sides of car, and on roof.

2. A 5" high and 1" wide number must be lettered on the top of the driver's side fender.

3. A 5" high and 1" wide number must be lettered on the driver's side of the rear of the car, between the bumper and the rear deck lid, approximately where the tail light would be located.

4. Numbers must be clearly readable to scorers. Gold or silver not advisable unless outlined in a contrasting color.

5. Numbers may not be written out, numerals only.

6. "A" or "B" classification must be lettered in block letters on both sides of hook near base of windshield opening. Minimum 2" contrasting letters.

ROLL BARSClick here to return to previous page...

1. Steel roll-over bars are compulsory, and must be approved by tech. inspectors. Front and rear roll bars must be connected at top (cage type) and bottom on both sides at seat height. Side roll bars (3 on driver's side and 2 on passenger's side) are compulsory and must extend into door panels. Aluminum and other soft metals are not permitted.

2. Roll bars must be welded, and not less than 1 3/4" in outside diameter and walls must not be less than .090" thick. No pipe fittings allowed. All welds must have gusset plates of not less than .125" thickness.

3. Roll bars in driver area must be padded and taped with foam rubber from bottom of left window to center of top.

4. Roll bars on unibody cars must be mounted on steel pads over and under flooring. Pads to be at least 6"X6", secured by four 3/8" bolts on each pad.

QUALIFYING

1. Each competitor will have two (2) laps on the clock.

2. If you are more than three positions out of your assigned qualifying spot, spin, crash or have a mechanical problem during your qualifying attempt, you will have only one qualifying lap.

Starting Positions

1. Drivers are awarded starting positions in heat races based on their qualifying.

2. All heats and mains will be run partially or totally inverted.

3. Fast qualifier will start outside the last row in heat one. Second fast outside the last row in heat two. Third fast inside the last row in heat one, etc. If three or more heats are necessary the progression will be carried further.

4. Line up for main event will be determined from the finishing order of the heat races. First place in heat one starts inside row one. First place in heat two starts outside row one. Second place in heat one starts inside row two, etc. If more heats are run the progression will be carried further.

5. After the main event lineup is complete an inversion will be applied to the field from the results of a pill draw.

6. Any driver failing to get a qualifying time, for any reason, will start at the rear of his heat.

TEARDOWNS

ANY DRIVER REFUSING TO ALLOW POST RACE INSPECTION OR TEARDOWN WILL LOSE ALL
POINTS FOR THE NIGHT AND ALL PREVIOUS RACE NIGHTS.

PROTESTS

1. A protest in writing, by any owner or driver, on an approved Santa Maria Speedway protest form, along with $200.00 cash, may be filed with the Chief Steward within fifteen (15) minutes following the finish of the event. Protests will be settled by the "Protest Committee". If the protest is upheld, the $200.00 fee will be refunded. If the protest is denied, the $200.00 will go to the SMS Driver's Benevolent Fund. In the event an engine tear-down is required, the only persons allowed at the tear-down will be the SMS Tech Inspectors and the car owner. Frivolous protests will be denied.

a. No protest will be accepted that is directed at a decision of an official, including but not limited to timing and scoring decisions, inspections and race procedure decisions.

b. Discussion as to official rulings, race procedures, etc. will be conducted with the driver only.

MISCELLANEOUS

1. No radios or scanners in cars or in pits. No mirrors.

NOTICE: Any parts, pieces or assembly thereof that pass through technical inspection undetected and that do not conform to the rules, will not be considered to be approved if detected in later inspections.

LICENSING

1. Fees: Drivers - $43.00; Mechanics - $43.00; Owners - $43.00; Car Number - $43.00.
